What Are the Advantages of Using Lithium-Ion Batteries?

Compared to other batteries such as lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries have many advantages in terms of safety and functionality. The main advantages are as follows.

Lithium-ion batteries are smaller than other batteries and have a higher energy density

Secondary batteries can be used repeatedly such as lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, and nickel-cadmium batteries. Compared to these batteries, lithium-ion batteries are small, light and have high energy density.

Comparing the characteristics of these batteries of the same size, the output voltage of lead-acid batteries can only reach 2.1V, that of nickel-metal hydride batteries is 1.2V, and that of nickel-cadmium batteries is 1.25V. While the lithium-ion battery can output a high voltage of 3.2 ~ 3.7V.

Lithium-ion battery withstands repeated charge and discharge

Unlike other secondary batteries, lithium-ion batteries do not generate electricity by chemical reactions, so the aging of the electrodes is less than other secondary batteries, and it is very resistant to repeated charge and discharge.

Lithium-ion batteries can be charged quickly

A great feature of lithium-ion batteries is their ability to charge quickly. Although other secondary batteries other than lithium-ion batteries can also be quickly charged in a short period of time. However, nickel-metal hydride batteries and nickel-cadmium batteries are difficult to judge whether they are fully charged. The lithium-ion battery can be judged by the charger if it is fully charged.

Lithium-ion batteries have low self-discharge

Even if the battery is not used, the power will be lost. This phenomenon is called "self-discharge" phenomenon. For example, if the car has not been driven for more than a month, when you want to move it, there will be a situation where the voltage is low and the ignition cannot be started. The cause of this so-called "battery dead" state is self-discharge.

Self-discharge is caused by a chemical reaction that occurs little by little in a battery even if it is not used. The reaction mechanism adopted by the lithium-ion battery is different from the battery reaction that occurs in other secondary batteries, so the lithium-ion battery hardly produces self-discharge.
